African researchers are increasingly turning to the continent's rich biodiversity to develop practical solutions for pressing issues in nutrition, agriculture, and climate resilience. At the recent Biobased Innovation and Entrepreneurship Bootcamp hosted by the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), innovators from six countries presented promising ideas that blend scientific research with commercial potential.

Harnessing Indigenous Resources for Nutrition

Ugandan researcher Robin Okot highlighted the untapped potential of Owelo berries, a local fruit abundant in northern Uganda but largely discarded each year. With childhood malnutrition prevalent—half of children under five suffer iron deficiency anaemia and a quarter lack vitamin A—Okot developed a nutritious drink from these berries. The product aims to boost children's growth, immunity, and iron intake while creating income opportunities for rural harvesters. Okot plans to initially target mothers with young children in northern Uganda before expanding regionally.

Improving Livestock Productivity Sustainably

Kenyan scientist George Odongo is addressing livestock disease challenges that drive farmers’ heavy reliance on antibiotics, which raises costs and harms animal immunity. His research produced a probiotic supplement that enhances livestock gut health, improves feed conversion, increases meat yields, and reduces antibiotic use. Designed to complement local feeds and tolerate standard storage, the supplement also has potential to lower methane emissions, supporting environmental sustainability.

Turning Agricultural Waste into Protein

Tanzanian environmental scientist Asha Shuli is innovating by using soybean waste, abundant in Tanzania, to rear black soldier fly larvae as a high-protein, low-fat feed source for livestock and aquaculture. Unlike conventional methods relying on variable domestic waste, her approach yields nutrient-rich larvae and organic fertilizer, lowering feed costs and adding value to agricultural by-products.

Building a Pipeline of Science-Based Enterprises

The bootcamp, now in its fourth cohort and organised by BioInnovate Africa with funding from Sweden’s Sida, selected 13 early-career researchers from across East Africa. Over 10 days, participants refined business models, developed market strategies, and practiced investor pitching. The programme included visits to research institutions, manufacturing firms, and the East African Community headquarters to demonstrate how innovations can scale beyond borders.

BioInnovate Africa Programme Manager Julius Ecuru emphasized the focus on sustainable business creation rather than just scientific ideas. "We seek innovations that can become viable enterprises," he said. Several participants are expected to receive seed funding to advance their projects, with the ultimate goal of fostering entrepreneurs who can transform scientific discoveries into solutions that improve livelihoods, strengthen food systems, and drive economic growth across the region.
