Newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has described Morgan Rogers as a "great signing" who will enhance the club's competitiveness. The England midfielder, acquired from Aston Villa for a British record £117 million, is expected to form a strong partnership with fellow midfielder Cole Palmer.
Alonso expressed his satisfaction with securing the 23-year-old ahead of Chelsea's pre-season opener against Western Sydney Wanderers. "We needed a key player in that position, and Morgan was one of the best options available," Alonso said.
The signing signals Chelsea's intent to bounce back after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European competition. Alonso faces the challenge of integrating Rogers alongside Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian, and new signing Geovany Quenda in the attacking midfield roles.
"I have a clear plan and believe Morgan and Palmer, who are close friends with similar playing styles, will complement each other well," Alonso explained. "Finding the right balance between stability and freedom in the team will make us more competitive both with and without the ball."
Chelsea had pursued Rogers for two years and outbid Arsenal, whose offer was reportedly rejected by Aston Villa. Rogers’ transfer fee surpassed the previous British record set by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson’s move from Nottingham Forest.
Alonso praised Rogers’ versatility, noting his ability to play centrally or from the left wing. "We will position him where he enjoys his game and can connect effectively with teammates," Alonso added. "This will elevate the overall quality of our play."
Chelsea's pre-season tour continues with a match against Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney, followed by a game versus Juventus in Hong Kong on August 5.
