Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has publicly criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for making ethnic-based remarks against North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood Abdul.
Waiguru responded after Gachagua questioned why voters in North Imenti elected Dawood, who is of Indian descent, instead of a representative from the Meru community during a rally in Meru.
Waiguru Defends Rahim Dawood and Voters' Choice
She emphasized that leadership should be based on capability and service, not ethnicity. Waiguru applauded the people of North Imenti for exercising their democratic right in choosing a candidate they deemed fit to represent them.
"When the people of North Imenti elected Hon. Rahim Dawood Abdul, they looked at him and saw an able representative. They chose him. Rigathi Gachagua's ethnic tirades, borne of a bloated ego, are now treading on dangerous ground," Waiguru stated.
Warning Against Ethnic Politics
Waiguru cautioned that politics framed around ethnic identity threatens national unity and the constitutional principles of equality. She insisted that no Kenyan's ethnic background should limit their rights to live, work, marry, or hold public office anywhere in the country.
She called for leadership that fosters inclusion rather than tribalism, saying, "Enough is enough. We need to provide the leadership Kenya needs, and it cannot be founded on ethnicity and sectarian division."
Gachagua's Remarks at Meru Rally
