Anglican Archbishop Jackson Nasoore Ole Sapit has expressed concerns over President William Ruto’s newly unveiled Vision 2060 development plan, cautioning that its timing may exacerbate political tensions ahead of the upcoming elections.

Speaking during a live TV interview on August 12, 2026, the Archbishop acknowledged the importance of strategic planning but warned that introducing such a major national agenda at this moment could reignite divisions reminiscent of the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Archbishop Ole Sapit stated:

  • "Planning is essential for any government or institution."
  • "However, launching a plan just before elections risks repeating the mistakes of the BBI, which polarized the nation."

The BBI, a constitutional reform effort championed by the previous administration, was ultimately nullified by the courts amid heated public debate and political unrest prior to the 2022 polls.

President Ruto officially launched the Vision 2060 framework on the same day during the “Beyond Vision 2030” forum held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi. The event gathered over 5,000 delegates, including county officials, sector experts, and faith leaders.

The new framework aims to succeed Vision 2030 by charting Kenya’s development trajectory over the next 30 years. Unlike its predecessor, Vision 2060 incorporates mandatory public participation as required by the 2010 Constitution.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi outlined Vision 2060 as a transformative strategy inspired by rapid industrialisation models from countries like Singapore and South Korea. Key focus areas include:

  • Artificial intelligence adoption
  • Technological innovation
  • Climate change mitigation

President Ruto emphasized inclusive engagement with academia, private sector, civil society, and youth groups to ensure broad-based input into the plan.

Despite the government’s assurances, Archbishop Ole Sapit’s remarks highlight ongoing apprehension about the political ramifications of launching major initiatives close to election periods.
