Arsenal defender William Saliba has taken time off to visit his maternal roots in Douala, Cameroon, following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Born in Bondy, France, to a Cameroonian mother, Saliba used his summer break to reconnect with his extended family and celebrate his heritage.
During the trip, Saliba met local community figures, including Ayi Ventilateur and Ali Hob, and generously distributed Arsenal jerseys, turning the occasion into a heartfelt gathering that merged family ties with his football journey.
This visit comes shortly after Arsenal confirmed that Saliba sustained a back injury during France's World Cup semi-final match against Spain. The injury forced him off the pitch in the 30th minute and has since ruled him out of action for an extended period.
Following detailed medical evaluations in London, Arsenal announced that surgery is not necessary. Instead, Saliba will undergo a carefully managed rehabilitation program before resuming training.
Arsenal's official statement read: "Subsequent specialist reviews on William's return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation. Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme."
