Embakasi East MP John Babu Owino has raised serious concerns over threats of violence ahead of the Linda Mwananchi rally scheduled for Sunday, August 16, in Homa Bay County.

During a media briefing on August 12, Babu Owino accused prominent Nyanza leaders, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Opondo Kaluma, and an MCA named Ogindo, of allegedly orchestrating armed gangs to disrupt the event.

He claimed that these leaders convened late into the night, allegedly planning to deploy goons to attack rally attendees, describing the situation as a looming "bloodbath." The MP called on the police to act swiftly and provide sufficient security to protect residents and political figures expected at the rally.

Babu Owino questioned the rationale behind local leaders allegedly targeting their own constituents, noting that no presidential candidate from the region is involved in the rally. He referenced the peaceful 2022 presidential campaigns of President William Ruto in the area, despite stiff competition with Raila Odinga, to highlight the unusual nature of the threats against Linda Mwananchi.

The MP also expressed frustration over what he termed political intolerance in Luo Nyanza, contrasting it with the warm reception Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna received in Western Kenya during similar political activities.

Key points raised by Babu Owino include:

  • Alleged coordination of armed gangs by local leaders to disrupt the rally.
  • Calls for deployment of adequate police personnel across Homa Bay, including Kabunde Airstrip, where Linda Mwananchi officials are expected.
  • Concerns over political intolerance and the targeting of opposition supporters in the region.
  • Insistence that the rally will proceed as planned despite threats.
  • Challenge to government-aligned leaders to participate openly in the rally to promote democratic engagement.

Babu Owino stated he has already briefed the Nyanza Regional Criminal Investigations Officer on the threats and urged the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to ensure the safety of all involved.

Homa Bay has a history of political tensions and violence, raising the stakes for security ahead of the event.
