Russian rescue teams have recovered the bodies of five foreign climbers on Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Russia, following a deadly accident attributed to severe weather conditions.
The group of seven climbers, reportedly Bosnian nationals, encountered rapidly worsening weather on July 25, which caused them to deviate from their planned route.
According to a statement from the local prosecutor's office, one climber descended to alert authorities that two members had fallen ill at an altitude of 5,100 meters and subsequently died.
Rescue operations later located another survivor as well as the bodies of three additional climbers who had succumbed to the harsh conditions.
Elmedin Konakovic, Bosnia's Foreign Minister, confirmed the fatalities and described the incident as a "major tragedy." The search and recovery efforts have now concluded with five confirmed deaths.
