British cyclist Finlay Tarling, aged 19, tragically lost his life following a collision during the eighth stage of the Tour of Portugal. The incident occurred on the route between Melgaco and Fafe, race organisers confirmed.
According to Portuguese broadcaster RTP, Tarling was involved in a head-on crash with a vehicle that was not associated with the race and was travelling in the opposite direction. The accident was described as serious, prompting the suspension of the stage with approximately 20 kilometres remaining.
Out of respect and mourning, organisers cancelled the podium ceremony for the stage. The NSN Development Team, for which Tarling competed, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to his family, including his brother Josh Tarling, who rides for Netcompany-Ineos.
"Fin was a beloved member of our squad and, more importantly, a cherished son, brother, and friend. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him," the team stated on social media.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also conveyed his sympathies on social media, describing the news as profoundly shocking.
The NSN Development Team is notably co-owned by former Barcelona football legend Andres Iniesta.
