Bernard Otieno, a 31-year-old Busia resident, was reportedly stabbed six times and killed during a nighttime home invasion in Aget, Busia County, on July 28.
Otieno's wife, Linet Akinyi, described the attack happening around 2 a.m. when assailants first broke into a neighbour’s house before forcing their way into their locked apartment. It remains unclear how the intruders accessed their home.
"One of the attackers jumped the fence while the other struggled with my husband, stabbing him multiple times," Akinyi recounted. The assailants also stole Otieno’s phone before fleeing the scene.
Otieno was rushed to the district hospital by a relative but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Calls for Urgent Security Response
Human rights activist Eunice Adhiambo, who visited the scene, condemned the escalating insecurity in Busia County. She urged the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the county commissioner, and security agencies to take immediate action.
"Insecurity in Busia has intensified, with attacks affecting boda riders, youths, women, and children. We demand urgent interventions," Adhiambo stated.
Context of Rising Violence
The fatal stabbing in Busia comes amid growing concerns over violent crimes across Kenya. In a related incident in Vihiga County, a family was assaulted by suspected robbers who attacked eight relatives, including children, with hammers and knives. Local residents apprehended and fatally beat one of the suspects.
As investigations continue, Otieno’s family has called for justice, though police and local officials have yet to release statements regarding the attack.
