American hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper recently visited Nairobi, where he explored Kenya's rich history by touring the Nairobi National Museum's Mau Mau exhibition.
During the visit, Chance was accompanied by his family and shared photos of exhibits featuring key freedom fighters like Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi and the Land and Freedom Army. He emphasized the significance of the Mau Mau movement as a pivotal and successful violent revolt against British colonial rule.
Chance the Rapper urged Kenyans to educate younger generations about this crucial chapter in their history:
"Today we went to Nairobi to learn more about the land and freedom army popularly known as the MAU MAU. The history of this incredibly important and successful violent revolt against British colonialism and subjugation must be taught to your children."
Chance has been an outspoken advocate for racial justice and has supported the Black Lives Matter movement since 2020. He has used his platform to highlight issues of state violence and the importance of accurate representation of protests in the media.
Beyond the museum, Chance also immersed himself in Kenyan culture by visiting local markets in Nairobi, as well as traveling to Mombasa and Diani Beach on the coast.
