Rescue teams in southwestern China have confirmed 30 additional deaths from a devastating landslide that struck Pengshui County, Chongqing, earlier this month. This brings the confirmed death toll to 41.
The landslide occurred on July 17, sweeping away several homes located at the base of a mountain and along a riverbank. Dramatic state media footage showed a massive collapse of rocks and soil engulfing a residential and commercial area.
Hundreds of rescue workers were deployed to search for survivors amid the rubble. Initial reports on Friday indicated 11 fatalities, with about 50 people still missing. However, after conducting DNA testing and identifying remains recovered from the site, authorities officially confirmed the higher death toll on Tuesday.
This tragedy follows closely on the heels of another deadly landslide in Gansu province in northwestern China, which claimed 21 lives and buried 33 people.
