Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has kept a low profile on the campaign trail recently, focusing instead on coalition meetings, church events, and funerals. This has sparked speculation about his political strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

Despite previously ruling out joining President William Ruto's government and affirming his presidential ambitions, the idea of a Ruto-Kalonzo alliance cannot be dismissed outright. Kenyan politics has a history of transforming rivals into partners, and Ruto has openly invited Kalonzo to collaborate.

During a recent visit to Kitui, Ruto assured Ukambani residents that his administration represents them and promised equitable resource allocation. Key MPs from the region, including Kapseret’s Oscar Sudi and Kibwezi West’s Mwengi Mutuse, have urged Kalonzo to join the government and work alongside Ruto.

Electoral Arithmetic Behind a Possible Alliance

The 2022 presidential election highlighted the potential impact of a Ruto-Kalonzo partnership. Ruto secured 7,176,141 votes, narrowly defeating Raila Odinga, who garnered 6,942,930 votes—a margin of just 233,211 votes.

The Ukambani counties of Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni, with about 1.7 million registered voters, delivered approximately 769,386 votes to Raila and only 250,161 to Ruto. Kalonzo was Raila’s main ally in this region, and shifting even a portion of this support toward Ruto could alter future election outcomes.

Current polls, such as the TIFA survey, show Kalonzo commanding 58% support in Lower Eastern while Ruto stands at 15%. However, voter loyalty is complex, and some opposition supporters may reject Kalonzo if he joins Ruto’s government.

The Mt Kenya Factor

Mt Kenya, with 5.7 million registered voters in 2022, gave Ruto nearly 2.94 million votes. The region currently lacks a clear frontrunner for the presidency. Polls indicate fragmented support among Rigathi Gachagua (19%), Fred Matiang’i (18%), and Ruto (8%), with 25% undecided.

If Mt Kenya unites behind a strong candidate, a Ruto-Kalonzo ticket could face stiff competition or a run-off. Conversely, a divided Mt Kenya vote might enable Ruto to consolidate support from the Rift Valley, Ukambani, and possibly Western and Nyanza regions.

Implications for Kalonzo

Accepting the deputy presidency would require Kalonzo to secure clear terms on power-sharing and future succession. While this move could advance his political influence, it might also end his pursuit of the presidency as an independent candidate.

Political watchers are advised to monitor any formal discussions between Ruto and Kalonzo for developments that could reshape Kenya’s political alliances ahead of 2027.
