Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has strengthened Kenya’s healthcare collaboration with Amref Health Africa, focusing on expanding medical oxygen access, improving maternal and newborn health, and advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
In a meeting held on July 27, 2026, CS Duale and Amref’s Group CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi reviewed progress in their partnership aimed at building resilient and equitable health systems.
Installation of Oxygen Plants in Underserved Counties
Central to the discussion was Amref’s support in establishing 22 medical oxygen generation plants across 12 counties with limited access to oxygen. This initiative is expected to enhance emergency and critical care services in these regions.
Focus on Reducing Maternal and Newborn Deaths
The partners also emphasized the implementation of the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) initiative, which targets the reduction of preventable maternal and newborn fatalities. The collaboration promotes evidence-based policies through research and highlights the role of Community Health Promoters in expanding primary healthcare access.
Supporting Health Workforce Development
CS Duale acknowledged Amref International University’s contribution to strengthening Kenya’s health workforce by providing training, research, and capacity-building programs.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the partnership to develop a people-centred health system and accelerate Kenya’s progress toward Universal Health Coverage.
