Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has called for targeted development efforts in Mt Kenya East, highlighting long-standing disparities compared to the western counties.
During a July 27, 2026 interview, Ruku refuted claims that his advocacy aimed to divide the politically significant Mt Kenya region. Instead, he emphasized the need to address historical inequalities affecting eastern counties.
Infrastructure Gaps Highlighted
Ruku pointed out that Mt Kenya West holds 77.7% of the region's tarmac road network, leaving Mt Kenya East with only 22.7%. Reflecting on his experience since 2002, he noted that his former constituency spanned 871 square kilometres but had merely 37 kilometres of tarmac roads.
He identified Meru, Isiolo, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, and Kirinyaga as counties requiring increased investment to bridge development deficits. The current government has prioritized projects enhancing roads, electricity, water supply, and public services in the eastern counties.
Specifically, Meru County is witnessing over 300 kilometres of roads under construction, 1,102 affordable housing units, markets accommodating 6,250 traders, and hostels with 3,850 beds for technical trainees.
Addressing Political Criticism
Responding to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's comments on Mt Kenya politics, Ruku acknowledged the region’s shared identity but stressed the importance of equitable resource distribution to meet diverse county needs.
He noted that while Gachagua has significant support in Mt Kenya West, it does not extend across the entire region. Ruku underscored Mt Kenya’s strong representation in the Kenya Kwanza administration, including cabinet secretaries, principal secretaries, and ambassadors.
Calls for Equitable Growth
Ruku highlighted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s role in government as evidence of Mt Kenya’s continued influence in national leadership. He also pointed to improved commodity prices for tea, coffee, and milk as positive outcomes under the current administration.
The cabinet secretary reiterated that special consideration for Mt Kenya East aims to accelerate development and ensure infrastructure and services reach all counties, fostering balanced growth and enhanced livelihoods.
