Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Ruku has dismissed claims that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna poses a significant threat to President William Ruto’s bid for re-election in 2027.
Speaking in an interview on Citizen TV, CS Ruku emphasized that while Sifuna’s profile is rising nationally, he has yet to build the extensive political networks and grassroots support needed for a credible presidential campaign.
Political Reach and Campaign Infrastructure
Ruku noted that mounting a nationwide campaign requires years of groundwork, including institutional structures and local-level engagement beyond major urban centres. He explained that successful candidates must secure support in all regions, citing Nakuru County as an example where outreach must extend to areas like Rongai, Gilgil, and Naivasha rather than just the city.
Opinion Polls and Election Prospects
The Cabinet Secretary highlighted recent opinion polls showing President Ruto leading comfortably. While acknowledging Sifuna’s improved standing—outperforming figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i—Ruku predicted the senator’s support would likely plateau below 15 percent.
He further stressed that President Ruto has not yet officially launched his campaign, focusing instead on implementing development programs. Ruku expressed confidence that when Ruto eventually campaigns as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, his popularity will strengthen, especially in key regions like Mt Kenya.

Senator Edwin Sifuna has gained prominence as a vocal opposition figure, leveraging public rallies, parliamentary debates, and media appearances to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration. Despite this, CS Ruku maintains that Sifuna’s current political stature falls short of mounting a serious challenge to the incumbent president.
