Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has appealed to former President Uhuru Kenyatta to help unify the Mt Kenya region and consolidate support for President William Ruto’s reelection campaign ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking in Meru on July 25, 2026, Kindiki tasked former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi with engaging Uhuru, citing Kiraitu’s extensive political experience and deep roots in the region as crucial for delivering this message.
"I am sending elder Kiraitu because no one else has his political track record. Even I have not reached his level," Kindiki said, emphasizing Uhuru’s continued influence in Mt Kenya politics.
Kindiki recalled his role as part of Uhuru’s legal team during the International Criminal Court cases at The Hague, where both Uhuru and Ruto faced charges before the cases were dropped. He noted that during Uhuru’s presidency, regional leaders maintained strong support for his administration.
He urged Kiraitu to request Uhuru’s intervention to preserve unity among Mt Kenya communities and discourage divisive political factions ahead of the elections.
"Find our leader, Uhuru Kenyatta, and ask him to speak to ensure this community remains united as we found it," Kindiki said, warning against competing political voices within the region.
This call for unity follows Kindiki’s earlier statements rejecting proposals to split Mt Kenya into separate political blocs. On July 19, 2026, in Embu, he stressed that the communities in the region are "one people" and should not be divided.
The appeal comes amid rising political competition in Mt Kenya, with figures like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua advocating for a unified regional voice, while Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has pushed for greater political recognition of Mt Kenya East counties.
Kindiki has consistently opposed moves that could fracture historical ties among Mt Kenya communities and indicated that the 2027 election will be President Ruto’s final term before retirement, similar to Uhuru’s path.
