Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has emphatically declared his intention to remain in the Kenya Kwanza administration, pushing back against efforts by some political actors, including ODM members, aiming to sideline him ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking on July 25 at the 11th Annual Farmers Field Day held at Gitoro Show Grounds in Meru Town, Kindiki dismissed speculation about his potential removal from government, asserting that his role in building the current administration secures his place.
Standing Firm Amid Political Pressure
Kindiki addressed concerns that President William Ruto might consider a different running mate for the upcoming election, amid claims that he lacks the grassroots support to deliver the critical Mt Kenya vote. Some analysts and politicians have suggested that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now leading the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), commands stronger regional backing.
Additionally, there have been calls for Ruto to explore running mates from Western Kenya or Nyanza to broaden his appeal, reflecting perceived challenges in the Mt Kenya support base.
Defending His Position
Rejecting these narratives, Kindiki stated:
- "Stop your games, this is our government and we won't leave."
- "We are fighting right inside. I know we have become many in government, those from ODM have joined us, but we are not leaving, because this is our government."
He further used a vivid metaphor to underline his commitment:
"You don't build a house, complete it, furnish it and then abandon it to go live in the forest."
Kindiki acknowledged some allies had privately urged him to step aside but affirmed his decision to remain steadfast in his position.
Significance in Kenya Kwanza
By emphasizing his foundational role in forming the Kenya Kwanza government, Kindiki positioned himself as a key figure with a legitimate claim to ongoing participation, rather than a political appointee vulnerable to shifting alliances.
