Kenya continued to shine on the athletics track at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Diana Wanza clinching a silver medal in the women's 10,000 metres and Lilian Odira advancing confidently to the 800 metres semi-finals.

Wanza clocked a time of 31:50.13 to finish second behind Australia's Rose Davies, who took gold with a 31:39.32 finish. This result adds to Kenya's rich history in the event, although the country is still chasing its first women's 10,000m Commonwealth gold since Joyce Chepkirui's victory in 2014.

Fellow Kenyan runners Miriam Chebet and Rebecca Mwangi also delivered solid performances, finishing seventh and tenth respectively, helping Kenya earn valuable points in a fiercely contested race.

Wanza’s silver marks a significant achievement in a breakthrough season, having recently secured the African 10,000m title. Her rise cements her position among Africa’s elite long-distance athletes.

Lilian Odira Advances in 800m

In the women's 800m heats, reigning world champion Lilian Odira demonstrated her dominance by leading from the front and comfortably qualifying for the semi-finals without needing to rely on a fastest-loser spot.

Odira, who earned her first Commonwealth Games selection after claiming a third consecutive national title earlier this year, aims to add a Commonwealth medal to her world championship crown won in Tokyo last year. Her smooth progression keeps Kenya in strong contention for a podium finish in the middle-distance event.

These performances underscore Kenya’s promising start in the track and field events, with anticipation building as more finals unfold throughout the Games.
