The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has issued a stern warning to politicians and others inciting political tensions and violence as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at the 38th National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) Conference in Mombasa, Ingonga expressed deep concern over the surge in inflammatory political statements and disruptions caused by goons at political events.
He emphasized that his office is collaborating closely with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to ensure that those responsible face prosecution.
Ingonga stated: "Inflammatory statements made by politicians across the divide will be addressed decisively. We will bring these individuals to book in partnership with DCI and NCIC."
Beyond hate speech, the DPP warned that organizers and participants of political violence would also be held accountable. He underscored the importance of national unity and the need to prevent any actions that could plunge the country into chaos.
"We only have one country, Kenya, and we will not allow a few individuals to drag others into anarchy," Ingonga added.
This comes shortly after President William Ruto directed security agencies to take firm action against criminal gangs and those involved in violence, stressing the protection of peace and property.
Judiciary Prepares for Election Disputes
Chief Justice Martha Koome also highlighted intensified preparations for the upcoming elections. She noted that judicial officers are being trained to handle election-related disputes efficiently.
Koome stressed the importance of interagency cooperation, saying, "NCAJ has agreed to reactivate all committees on election preparedness. The Judiciary is set to begin training judges, magistrates, and staff to ensure a peaceful and orderly election environment."
The conference convened key players in the justice sector to discuss strategies for maintaining peace, enforcing the rule of law, and ensuring accountability during the electoral period.
