Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, renowned for being the first woman to serve as Chancellor of the University of Nairobi (UoN), passed away, marking the end of a significant era in Kenyan academia.
Professor Stephen Kiama, UoN's eighth Vice-Chancellor from 2020 to 2024, announced her death on July 30, expressing deep sorrow and highlighting her unwavering support during his tenure.
Trailblazing Leadership and Advocacy
Rattansi held the chancellorship from 2013 to 2023, during which she was widely recognized for her commitment to expanding access to higher education. Beyond her role at UoN, she was Chairperson of the Rattansi Educational Trust and the Daisy Eye Cancer Fund, and served as a Trustee of the Michael Blundell Trust.
Her expertise spanned corporate governance, strategic planning, conflict mediation, gender and development, and institutional fundraising, contributing significantly to the organizations she led.
