Kenya continued its dominance in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Edmund Serem leading a memorable podium sweep on Monday night.
Serem clinched gold in a time of 8:18.23, followed closely by compatriots Simon Koech, who took silver clocking 8:18.59, and Leonard Bett, who secured bronze with 8:21.63. This result marked Kenya’s 10th straight Commonwealth Games title in the event and a rare clean sweep of the medals.
Race Dynamics
Despite facing a strong field that included world champion George Beamish, the Kenyan trio quickly asserted control, setting and maintaining a steady pace from the start. Koech initially led the pack, with Bett and Serem close behind during the early stages.
Three laps before the finish, Serem increased the pace, gradually distancing himself and Koech from Bett and the rest of the field. As the bell rang signalling the final lap, Serem launched a powerful finishing kick to overtake Koech, who was unable to respond.
Post-Race Reflections
Elated by his victory and the team’s achievement, Serem said, "Today I am very happy. I have won my first title at my first Commonwealth Games. I know my family and 50 million Kenyans are happy. More so, we achieved a clean sweep for Kenya."
This gold adds to Serem’s growing reputation, following his 2024 African championship win in Douala and a bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, confirming him as one of Kenya’s brightest steeplechase talents.
