Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna disclosed that Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Erastus Ethekon refused to be photographed with him during the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Gala dinner held in Diani, Kwale County on August 15.
While pleased to see Ethekon among fellow lawyers, Sifuna noted the chairman's reluctance to pose for pictures alongside him. The senator humorously attributed this to the political consequences faced by those publicly linked with him, citing examples such as Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, who lost key leadership roles.
Warning to IEBC Chair
Despite the light tone, Sifuna issued a stern message to Ethekon, highlighting the heightened scrutiny the commission will face as the 2027 general election approaches. He predicted that future sessions, including those at the Bomas of Kenya, would be far more intense than the LSK event.
He urged the IEBC to ensure transparent and inclusive procurement of electoral technology and ballot papers. Sifuna emphasized sourcing from reputable companies and countries that hold their firms accountable internationally.
Call for Legal Leadership in Kenya
Addressing the gathering of legal professionals, Sifuna advocated for a lawyer to assume Kenya's presidency, linking this to the broader theme of electoral justice. He stressed that while political figures bear public expectations, the IEBC holds a constitutional duty to deliver a free, fair, and verifiable election.
