A video capturing Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna confronting armed police during the June 2024 protests against the Finance Bill has resurfaced online, drawing renewed attention amid his rising political profile ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The footage, recorded on June 25, 2024, outside the parliament, shows Sifuna stepping in front of police officers who were firing live rounds at youths protesting the Finance Bill. Despite gunshots ringing out nearby, the senator repeatedly urged the police to cease fire and protect the demonstrators.
Security personnel attempted to push Sifuna away multiple times, but he persisted in engaging the officers. Even fellow politicians tried to restrain him, yet Sifuna returned to the frontlines, standing firm amid the tense standoff.
In the background, unarmed individuals in plain clothes carrying firearms were also visible, adding to the charged atmosphere of the scene.
Video Gains Traction as Sifuna Seeks Leadership Role
The clip has gained traction during Sifuna’s recent homecoming in Bungoma County, where he is positioning himself as a leading figure in Western Kenya politics. Social media users have praised his bravery and willingness to defend ordinary citizens under threat, using the video to support calls for his presidential candidacy in 2027.
Sifuna’s popularity surged following his removal as ODM secretary general, which sparked the Linda Mwananchi movement and its slogan, "Mimi ndio Sifuna." This movement has organized mass rallies attracting thousands nationwide.
