Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna revealed that he declined a KSh 1 billion donation offered by a prominent Kenyan to fund the Linda Mwananchi movement's campaign rallies. He expressed concerns that such large donations from wealthy individuals could compromise political independence.
Speaking on Citizen TV on July 28, Sifuna emphasized that relying on a few wealthy financiers risks indebting leaders to private interests, which may conflict with public welfare once in office.
Advocating for Grassroots Funding
Sifuna called on ordinary Kenyans to contribute small amounts towards political campaigns, arguing that widespread public support creates accountable leadership. He said, "I'd rather be indebted to 10 million Kenyans who each send me KSh 10 than to two people sitting somewhere saying they each have KSh 5 million for me."
Emotional Support from Bungoma Traders
The senator recounted a touching moment at a Linda Mwananchi rally in Bungoma, where traders donated modest amounts such as KSh 10 coins and old KSh 50 notes. He assured contributors that their funds would be used responsibly to advance the movement's goals.
