Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced his readiness to collaborate with impeached former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in efforts aimed at removing President William Ruto from office. Speaking on Citizen TV, Sifuna emphasized that their shared political goal transcends past differences.
Unity Against Ruto
According to Sifuna, the alliance will include anyone committed to upholding the constitution, rule of law, and opposing President Ruto’s continued tenure. "We will work with everyone who believes that Ruto does not deserve an extra day in office," he stated.
Justification for Impeachment Vote
Sifuna defended his vote to impeach Gachagua, citing the former deputy president’s alleged interference in Nairobi city county management as the main reason. He dismissed calls for consistent opposition, invoking the legal principle of double jeopardy to argue that Gachagua has already faced consequences.
"He paid for his mistakes, he was impeached. What else do you want me to do, beat him?" Sifuna remarked.
He further noted that Gachagua bears a special responsibility to help remove Ruto, given his role in Ruto’s rise to power.
Denial of Bribery Allegations
Sifuna also addressed claims by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed that legislators were bribed to support Gachagua’s impeachment. He firmly denied receiving any inducement, stating his vote was based on publicly stated objections to Gachagua’s conduct.
"I did not need any inducement when it came to Gachagua's impeachment," he affirmed.
