Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has suggested he is open to contesting the presidency in the 2027 General Election, as his political movement, Linda Mwananchi, weighs the option of presenting a presidential candidate.
Speaking on Citizen TV's The Explainer Show, Sifuna stopped short of formally declaring a bid but acknowledged growing nationwide calls from supporters urging the movement to offer Kenyans an alternative leadership option.
Growing Support Sparks Internal Discussions
Sifuna explained that the increasing public demand has triggered internal debates within Linda Mwananchi about running a candidate. However, he emphasized that the movement has not reached a final decision.
"As Linda Mwananchi, we are strongly considering the prospect of running a presidential candidate because it is coming from the people," he said.
Building Grassroots and Assessing Strength
The senator noted that Linda Mwananchi is still expanding its grassroots network and has yet to engage enough counties to accurately gauge its electoral strength. He urged supporters to exercise patience while the movement continues consultations nationwide.
"We are pleading with the public for some patience to ascertain that the support is solid. There is a yearning across the country for fresh leadership," Sifuna stated.
Offering a Credible Alternative to Current Leadership
Sifuna stressed that if Linda Mwananchi decides to enter the race, it will not merely oppose President William Ruto but will present a credible alternative.
"If you are saying Ruto must go, you must be available to eject him," he remarked, adding that the decision on candidacy will be collective, involving leadership and supporters rather than an individual.
Readiness to Lead if Chosen
While not confirming his own candidacy, Sifuna indicated willingness to represent Linda Mwananchi should the movement choose him.
"If responsibility is placed on me, I will not run away. We will proceed with the people," he affirmed.
