El Salvador's judiciary has imposed prison terms exceeding 1,000 years on members of the El Gremio gang convicted of offenses including drug trafficking and money laundering.
The sentences come as part of President Nayib Bukele's rigorous campaign against gangs, initiated in 2022, which has resulted in the arrest of more than 90,000 alleged gang affiliates. Many detainees are held in high-security prisons known for their strict conditions.
Details of the Sentences
- Two gang members received sentences of 1,048 years each.
- A total of 28 gang members were convicted for involvement in illicit activities.
In March 2026, the Bukele-led Congress amended the constitution to abolish the previous maximum prison term of 60 years, introducing life sentences for serious crimes such as murder, rape, and terrorism. This amendment was later extended to include offenders under 18 years old.
Concerns Over Judicial Independence and Human Rights
President Bukele's administration exercises considerable control over the government, raising concerns from non-governmental organizations regarding the independence of the judiciary. Human rights groups have accused the government of arbitrary detentions and human rights violations, including allegations of crimes against humanity.
Amnesty International reports indicate that hundreds have died in custody and thousands have been detained without due process during the ongoing crackdown.
