Thuo Mathenge, the former chairman of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), has publicly condemned President William Ruto’s decision to revoke his appointment.
The dismissal, formalized through a gazette notice on July 24, 2026, came after Mathenge openly declared his political allegiance to Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
In a statement posted on social media, Mathenge asserted that his removal was a direct consequence of his support for Gachagua, who was impeached as deputy president in October 2024 and has since established the DCP as his political platform.
Mathenge’s response emphasizes conviction over intimidation:
- He stated that true leadership relies on principles rather than threats.
- He affirmed his commitment to the DCP and his intention to contest the Nyeri gubernatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
This move places Mathenge among a growing number of government appointees who privately align with opposition forces, as noted by Gachagua himself, who has predicted defections within government ranks.
The revocation of Mathenge’s role at KALRO highlights the political tensions within the Mount Kenya region, a key battleground where Gachagua seeks to consolidate influence ahead of the elections.
Mathenge’s defiance signals a willingness to forgo state positions in favor of political loyalty to the DCP, underscoring the evolving dynamics in Kenya’s political landscape as the 2027 polls approach.
