Ali Menza Mbogo, former Kisauni Member of Parliament and chair of the Lapset Development Authority, has indicated a possible departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to join the Jubilee Party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Mbogo, who has declared his intention to run for Mombasa governor, revealed that his decision hinges on Jubilee's commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent party nominations. He has already engaged with Jubilee’s senior leadership but remains cautious, recalling what he described as a political betrayal that thwarted his 2022 gubernatorial ambitions.

Engagement with Jubilee Party

During a meeting at Jubilee's Coast regional headquarters in Kizingo, Mombasa, on July 26, 2026, Mbogo expressed satisfaction with the reception from party officials and aspirants. He stated his readiness to collaborate with those committed to transforming Mombasa but emphasized that he will finalize his decision only after receiving firm assurances on the nomination process.

Mbogo has distanced himself from UDA amid speculation that the party might back incumbent Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, following a political alliance between President William Ruto and ODM leader Oburu Odinga.

Conditions and Political Ambitions

Mbogo disclosed that he has held talks with Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i, laying out conditions for his formal membership. He affirmed that his bid for the governorship is unwavering regardless of the party under which he contests.

“Our mission is to send the current governor home. Even if I stand alone, I will fight until that happens,” he said, criticizing the county administration for poor service delivery.

Jubilee’s Strategy in Mombasa

  • Jubilee’s Mombasa County chairman, Richard Barake, confirmed efforts to rebuild grassroots structures across all six constituencies in preparation for the 2027 elections.
  • Barake assured that the party would ensure transparent nominations, providing a level playing field for all aspirants.
  • He expressed confidence that leaders like Mbogo joining Jubilee would strengthen the party’s prospects in Mombasa.

Mbogo’s potential switch sets the stage for a competitive Jubilee nomination contest, with other aspirants like Nyali MP Mohammed Ali already declaring intentions to run under different parties.
