Kenya's Faith Cherotich delivered a stunning performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, capturing gold in the women's 3000m steeplechase with a Games record time of 9:01.76.
The 22-year-old world champion strategically paced her race before unleashing a powerful final surge past the last water jump, leaving her competitors behind. Australia's Elise Thorner secured silver with a personal best of 9:05.45, while Uganda's 2020 Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai settled for bronze in 9:09.96.
Kenyan Government Rewards Medalists
Although the Commonwealth Games do not offer direct prize money to athletes, the Kenyan government has a structured incentive scheme for its medallists. As the gold medalist, Cherotich will receive KSh 2.5 million. Silver and bronze medalists are awarded KSh 1.5 million and KSh 1 million respectively.
Following her victory, Cherotich expressed gratitude, saying, "I'm so happy. I thank God for today's victory. I was expecting this because I was well prepared, and I'm grateful that I've become the winner."
