Authorities in Kisii are investigating the suspected suicide of Corporal Marjorie Bosibori, a 42-year-old police signaller attached to Kisii Central Subcounty Police Headquarters.
On Tuesday morning at around 8 am, a fellow officer discovered Corporal Bosibori unresponsive inside the police radio room. She was seated with a gunshot wound to the chest, and an AK-47 rifle issued to her for duty lay beside her.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Corporal Bosibori had collected the rifle from the station armoury at approximately 6 pm the previous evening before providing security at a local supermarket. It is believed she locked herself inside the radio room before shooting herself.
Crime scene investigators recovered the AK-47, one spent cartridge, a loaded magazine with 29 rounds, the office padlock key, assorted medical drugs, and three mobile phones. No suicide note was found on her.
She was dressed in full police jungle uniform when found. Her body was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
Addressing Rising Suicide Cases Among Police
Police authorities acknowledge a worrying rise in suicide cases within the force, attributing the trend to trauma exposure related to their duties. To counter this, the National Police Service Commission has established a counselling unit dedicated to mental health and substance abuse prevention among officers. The unit also leads outreach programmes to support police welfare.
