Police in Migori County are investigating the death of a fisherman who was allegedly hacked to death following a disagreement over gambling winnings.
According to Muhuru Central Location Chief Olga Raden, the suspect, identified as Semeni Rongeri, a Tanzanian national, attacked the deceased, known only as James, after a card game dispute that occurred several days earlier. Preliminary inquiries suggest the suspect became enraged when James won the game and confronted him, leading to the fatal assault.
The victim succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. The suspect was reportedly attacked by a mob and sustained injuries before police intervened and took him into custody.
Mark Otieno, Chairperson of the Sumba Beach Management Unit, urged authorities to regulate gambling activities such as card games along the beaches and in Muhuru Bay town. He highlighted that gambling-related conflicts have increasingly led to serious incidents, including loss of life.
Otieno expressed regret over the fisherman’s death, emphasizing the need for stricter oversight of gambling practices in the region.
