Former Cabinet Secretary and Kilifi gubernatorial hopeful Aisha Jumwa has officially left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), closing a chapter on her affiliation with President William Ruto’s ruling party.
Jumwa made the announcement on Thursday, 30th April 2026, at her Kakuyuni residence in Malindi, Kilifi County, confirming she was no longer a UDA member. She said her decision came after months of reflection, prayer, and consultations with her constituents. Jumwa did not disclose which political party she would join next but promised to reveal her plans in due course.
Political Journey and Cabinet Tenure
Once a prominent Ruto ally at the Coast during the 2022 elections, Jumwa left ODM to join UDA. After Ruto’s victory, she was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Gender and Affirmative Action, later serving as Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage.
Her cabinet role ended abruptly on 11th July 2024 when President Ruto reshuffled his Cabinet amid nationwide protests, dropping several Secretaries including Jumwa.
Post-Cabinet Developments and Legal Setback
In January 2025, Jumwa was named Chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) for a three-year term, signaling a political comeback. However, her appointment was nullified by the High Court in May 2026 for failing to meet legal and constitutional requirements, cutting short her tenure.
Rift Within UDA and Political Future
Following her removal from government, Jumwa’s relationship with UDA soured, especially as she campaigned for the Kilifi gubernatorial seat. She pushed for transparent party nominations rather than consensus candidates, intensifying tensions with party leadership.
Her resignation is expected to shift political dynamics in Kilifi and the Coast region as the 2027 elections approach. Jumwa’s next political affiliation remains undisclosed, leaving many to watch closely as she vies to become Kilifi’s next governor.
