Daniel Adongo, a former Kenyan rugby player turned National Football League (NFL) linebacker, has been deported from the United States following a ruling that he overstayed his visa.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that the 37-year-old was removed from the country on June 20, 2026, after an immigration judge ordered his deportation in March. Authorities noted that Adongo’s visa expired in 2016, and his continued stay violated US immigration laws.

Criminal Record Influenced Deportation

ICE highlighted that Adongo’s deportation was also influenced by his criminal record in the US, which includes a 2020 conviction for criminal mischief. He was sentenced to one year in jail following that conviction. Additionally, he has faced other charges such as felony intimidation, battery, and disorderly conduct, although it remains unclear if these led to further convictions.

Douglas Thompson, ICE Chicago Assistant Field Office Director, emphasized the agency's commitment to enforcing immigration laws, stating that all individuals, including former professional athletes, are held accountable for violations.

From Kenyan Rugby to the NFL

Adongo's athletic journey is notable for his transition from rugby in Kenya to American football. In 2013, despite having no prior experience in the sport, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts and played as a linebacker during the 2013 and 2014 NFL seasons before departing in 2015.

Before moving to the US, Adongo was seen as one of Kenya's promising rugby talents, representing the country in international competitions.

ICE Enforcement Priorities

ICE reiterated that individuals with criminal convictions who violate immigration laws remain a priority for enforcement. Adongo became subject to mandatory detention under the Laken Riley Act due to his visa overstay and criminal record, which ultimately led to his removal from the country.
