Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, who made history as the University of Nairobi's first female Chancellor, has passed away. She served as Chancellor from 2013 until 2023, leaving a lasting legacy in Kenya's higher education sector.

Stephen Kiama, the immediate former Vice Chancellor of UoN, expressed deep sorrow over Dr. Rattansi's death on July 30, 2026. He highlighted her unwavering commitment to education and her generosity, which supported numerous students through scholarships.
"Her impact on the University of Nairobi and on education in Kenya will be felt for generations," Kiama said, recalling her steadfast support during challenging times in his tenure. He extended condolences to her family, offering them strength during this difficult period.
Contributions and Legacy
Beyond her role at UoN, Dr. Rattansi was actively involved in several charitable organizations. She chaired the Michael Blundell Trust, the Daisy Eye Cancer Fund, and the Rattansi Educational Trust, among others. Her expertise spanned institutional development, conflict resolution, corporate governance, strategic planning, and gender and development issues.
Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and Italian, she was known for inspiring messages such as her 2021 UoN graduation address, where she encouraged graduates to embrace their unique paths, likening life to popcorn popping under the same conditions but in different ways.
In recognition of her outstanding service to education and the community, Moi University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree.
