Gachagua Accuses KRA of Targeting Laikipia Traders Ahead of 2027 Polls

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly criticised the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), claiming the agency is exerting undue pressure on traders and businesses in Laikipia County. Speaking on August 19, 2026, during a meeting with Democratic Congress Party aspirants, Gachagua said KRA's enforcement actions have left him with nothing left to seize.

He also singled out KRA Chairman Nderitu Muriithi, accusing him of collaborating with President William Ruto to target residents of Laikipia. Gachagua questioned how Muriithi could represent an institution perceived to be oppressing his own community while simultaneously seeking political leadership among them.

Claims of Being Targeted by KRA

Gachagua revealed he had heard that KRA was pursuing him but insisted that previous seizures had depleted his assets. He said, "Even I hear they are after me, but I have nothing left to take. They have taken everything. Unless they detain me, there is nothing to seize except perhaps Pastor Dorcas or my children."

Addressing Muriithi directly, Gachagua urged him to reconsider his alliance with the government, stating, "Nderitu, please sit down and tell Kasongo to stop oppressing our people until next year. Come election time, we will reject Kasongo (Ruto) and you."

Pressure on Local Traders

Gachagua highlighted growing complaints from traders in Laikipia who face frequent tax demands and enforcement notices from KRA agents. He described the situation as distressing, with shop closures becoming common and many receiving tax letters despite having money.

He expressed disappointment that Muriithi, a native of Laikipia, would preside over an agency allegedly harming his own community, accusing him of underestimating the people’s intelligence and loyalty.

Political Context Ahead of 2027 Elections

These comments come amid heightened political activity as parties and candidates ramp up campaigns for the 2027 General Election. Gachagua’s critique of KRA aligns with his broader opposition to the Kenya Kwanza government, accusing state bodies of harassing ordinary citizens and businesses.

The debate over KRA’s enforcement policies has become a significant political issue, with leaders divided over the balance between tax compliance and economic impact. Gachagua’s statements seek to rally Laikipia residents to scrutinise leaders’ records as election season approaches.
