Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is reportedly facing political isolation orchestrated by President William Ruto, according to Deputy President candidate Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Speaking at a media roundtable, Gachagua alleged that President Ruto has encouraged leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration to publicly criticize Kindiki, placing him under significant but silent political pressure.
“Our son from Tharaka is suffering. I understand his plight because I endured similar challenges when I was Deputy President,” Gachagua said, referring to past experiences where he faced public criticism allegedly at President Ruto’s behest. He added that Ruto’s aim is to provoke Kindiki into resigning.
Historical Context of Political Pressure
Gachagua recounted an incident in Kisumu where, during President Ruto's attendance, allied leaders openly criticized him under the President’s instructions, indicating a pattern of internal political maneuvering within the administration.
Defense of Deputy President Kindiki
Gachagua defended Kindiki’s restrained response to controversial remarks made by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who recently likened the Kikuyu community to "hyenas" during a speech in Mandera County.
He argued that Kindiki’s position in government limits his ability to respond publicly, but criticized Duale for his divisive comments, noting that the Cabinet Secretary’s political standing is tied to support from the Mount Kenya region.
Controversy Surrounding Duale’s Remarks
- Duale accused previous administrations of neglecting the North Eastern region and denying residents national identity cards.
- His comments triggered widespread condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum, including Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and PLP’s Martha Karua.
