Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed allegations that he requested smaller opposition parties in the Mt Kenya region to disband and join the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence during a meeting with DCP grassroots leaders, Gachagua emphasized his commitment to multiparty democracy and clarified that he has never encouraged any political outfit to fold.
He addressed reports that misled leaders such as Justin Muturi (Democratic Party), Peter Munya (Party of National Unity), and Lenny Kivuti (Devolution Empowerment Party), stating that having multiple parties within the United Opposition would be advantageous in the 2027 General Election.
Multiparty Strength in Opposition
Gachagua highlighted that the presence of various parties allows for the deployment of more agents at polling stations to safeguard votes. Citing the recent Ol Kalou by-election, he noted how eight sets of agents from different parties contributed to their success against President William Ruto’s camp.
“I want all parties to promote their agendas in Mt Kenya. The only consensus should be on the presidency, while other elective seats remain competitive,” he said.
Coalition Talks on Hold
Regarding coalition negotiations, Gachagua stated that the DCP is currently focused on strengthening its grassroots support nationwide before entering any alliance discussions. He argued that political negotiations should follow once parties have consolidated their bases.
“We are not considering coalitions at this moment. Building a strong party foundation is our priority. Negotiations will come after we have established solid support,” he explained.
Calls for Unity and Respect
Gachagua’s remarks come amid ongoing divisions within the United Opposition over the timing and method of selecting their 2027 presidential candidate. While Gachagua advocates for naming the coalition flag bearer three to six months before the election, other leaders like Muturi prefer an earlier decision.
He also criticized PNU’s weak performance in Ol Kalou, urging parties to invest more in voter engagement. Meanwhile, he praised DCP’s growth through grassroots mobilisation and encouraged healthy competition among opposition parties for all seats except the presidency, where unity is essential.
