Gachagua Pledges Justice for Two Men Killed in Mbeere North Amid Police Brutality Claims

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to seek justice for two young men who died in Ishiara Town, Mbeere North, after allegedly falling victim to police brutality shortly following a recent by-election campaign.

Addressing residents in Evurore Ward on August 22, 2026, Gachagua criticized the government for failing to fulfill numerous promises made during the by-election period. He noted that while the administration had pledged various improvements to the community, these commitments remained unfulfilled.

"Five months ago, the outgoing regime made a plethora of promises during the by-election campaign for their candidate," Gachagua said. He added that the situation worsened when, a month after the elections, two young men lost their lives allegedly due to police violence while demanding government services.

Describing the incident as a painful reminder of broken promises and injustice, Gachagua said, "It is heartbreaking to witness such loss." He further pledged that his political camp would overhaul Kenya's governance structures if elected, with justice for the victims as a priority.

"We vow to change the structures of governance and, once in office, our government will seek justice for these two young souls," he affirmed.

Gachagua expressed gratitude to the residents of Ishiara and Mbeere North for their support and attentiveness to his message.

Background on Police Brutality Incident

The deaths followed a protest on April 14, 2026, where civilians demonstrated against the poor state of Ishiara Level IV Hospital. According to reports, police opened fire on peaceful protesters demanding better health services and functional facilities.

Justine Muturi, former Speaker of the National Assembly and a prominent Embu leader, condemned the incident as deeply personal and mourned the loss of the two citizens who sought only improved healthcare.

In response, Police Chief Douglas Kanja warned against political incitement and the mobilization of criminal gangs, pledging intensified operations to bring perpetrators to justice regardless of their status.
