Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe was recorded removing President William Ruto’s official portrait from his office on August 14, days after formally resigning from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
The video shows Kagombe taking down the framed image of the president and carrying it out of his office alongside another photo in which he posed with Ruto, gestures interpreted as a public rejection of the ruling party.
Kagombe’s Departure from UDA
Kagombe announced his exit from UDA on August 11, citing consultations with his Gatundu South constituents who expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s unfulfilled promises. Key concerns included delays in rehabilitating Mau Mau roads and unmet commitments to local tea farmers.
Known as GG Kagombe, the MP indicated alignment with the "Mlima voice" faction and noted that many residents now view UDA negatively, using the slang "WANTAM" to suggest Ruto’s leadership would last only one term.
Political Implications and Possible New Affiliation
Although Kagombe has not officially declared a new party affiliation, he has hinted at joining the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This move would deepen the growing divide within UDA as several MPs defect over unmet development pledges.
Additionally, Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu also resigned from UDA, accusing party leadership of undermining her political ambitions.
