Political analyst Prof Herman Manyora has pointed to Generation Z, voters from Western Kenya, and the country's middle class as pivotal groups likely to influence the outcome of the 2027 General Election.
In an interview with NTV, Manyora noted that these demographics have historically had low electoral participation but are now emerging as powerful voting blocs due to increased political engagement and voter registration efforts.
Key Demographics to Watch
- Generation Z: Since June 2024, young Kenyans have become more politically active, notably after Gen Z-led protests sparked national conversations. The recent Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration exercise added about 2.3 million new voters, many from this group, signaling higher anticipated turnout in 2027.
- Western Kenya: Traditionally underrepresented at the polls despite a large population, this region's voters are becoming more engaged. Manyora credits Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's political activities with energizing this demographic, which is spread across urban centers like Nairobi, Kajiado, and Limuru.
- Middle Class: This emerging voting bloc, comprising urban professionals, has shown increased political awareness. Manyora suggests that their growing participation could significantly impact electoral results.
Western Kenya has already seen an increase in registered voters from approximately 2.62 million in 2022 to around 2.92 million currently, with projections of up to 3.36 million by 2027, highlighting its rising electoral importance.
Prof Manyora's analysis underscores the shifting dynamics in Kenya's political landscape, where youth activism, regional mobilization, and middle-class engagement will be crucial in shaping the next general election.
