The incident occurred late Saturday near the Brandenburg Gate, close to the festival's closing concert. Investigators believe Ballout deliberately drove a van into a crowd before stabbing additional victims with a machete.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed that the attack is being treated as an Islamic extremist terror act. Ballout had previously attracted police attention due to multiple past offenses and his radicalization within Islamist circles in Berlin.
Born in Germany to a naturalized mother, Ballout had been convicted before and received a suspended sentence of 1 year and 10 months. Authorities have issued a wanted notice, warning the public that he may be armed and dangerous.
