Former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has voiced serious concerns over the rising use of inflammatory political language and ethnic profiling by some leaders as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
In a statement released on July 29, 2026, Moi criticized politicians who exploit ethnic and regional differences to advance their political agendas. He described such conduct as reckless and harmful to the country’s unity.
Unity at Stake
"The persistent use of inflammatory remarks and ethnic profiling threatens our national cohesion and peaceful coexistence," Moi said, emphasizing the need for restraint among political figures during this sensitive period.
He highlighted Kenya's diversity as a core strength that should unite rather than divide citizens. "Our greatest asset lies in our diversity, which must never be manipulated to foster hostility or deepen political divides," he added.
Call for Responsible Leadership
Moi urged political leaders to maintain dignity and avoid turning political competition into enmity among communities. He stressed that differences in opinion should not breed distrust or division.
"Leaders bear a moral duty to promote respectful discourse and protect national unity, especially during politically charged times," he noted.
Context of Rising Tensions
His remarks follow the National Cohesion and Integration Commission's (NCIC) recent announcement of investigations into high-profile figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, over allegations of hate speech and incitement.
Moi concluded by appealing to all Kenyans to uphold unity and work collectively towards a peaceful, stable, and prosperous nation despite political differences.
