Gor Mahia secured the inaugural Green Legacy Cup title after a thrilling encounter against newly promoted Migori Youth at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday. The FKF Premier League champions fought back from a 2-0 first-half deficit to draw 2-2 in regulation time before prevailing 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
Migori Youth stunned the crowd by taking an early two-goal lead through Dennis Oguta and Philemon Nyakwaka in the first half. However, Gor Mahia’s Paul Okoth’s spectacular overhead kick just before halftime reignited the champions’ hopes.
In the second half, Gor Mahia came out with renewed energy. Substitute Ebenezer Assifuah headed in the equalizer shortly after coming on, setting the stage for a tense finish. Both teams pushed for a winner but failed to break the deadlock, sending the match to penalties.
During the shootout, Gor Mahia converted four penalties while Migori Youth missed twice, handing the champions the trophy. The victory provides a morale boost for Gor Mahia ahead of the FKF Premier League season and their upcoming FKF Super Cup clash against Tusker.
Despite the loss, Migori Youth impressed by challenging the reigning champions and demonstrating their ability to compete at the top level. The Green Legacy Cup, organized by the ZamZam Foundation, aimed to raise funds for food security and environmental conservation projects.
