Government spokesperson Charles Owino has predicted a significant wave of resignations and defections among Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) and Principal Secretaries (PSs) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking in a recent radio interview, Owino said that many officials currently enjoying government perks such as salaries, official cars, and senior positions will soon begin publicly criticizing President William Ruto as they seek to reposition themselves politically.
Political Ambitions Over Public Interest
Owino argued that these departures will be motivated primarily by self-interest rather than genuine concern for the welfare of Kenyans. He warned that some officials will mislead the public by claiming to act for the people while having benefited from government resources.
"Come February next year, some PSs and CSs will start insulting the president after having enjoyed government benefits," Owino said. He also noted that these individuals often return to seek reconciliation if the president is re-elected, attributing their earlier opposition to pressure from their constituencies.
Pattern of Opportunistic Defections
The government spokesman highlighted a broader trend in Kenyan politics where defections are timed to align with shifting political fortunes. He urged citizens to scrutinize the timing and motives behind such moves, questioning why some politicians defect only when it suits their ambitions.
Drawing from his experience in Nyanza politics, Owino cited former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as an example of political fluidity, noting how Raila has worked with successive administrations despite past disagreements.
Owino urged the public not to be swayed by political theatrics but to critically assess each politician's track record and the context of their actions.
