The Republic of Guinea-Bissau has dismissed recent online rumors suggesting it intends to recognise the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities in Bissau, the country has neither made any decision nor begun any process related to recognising Somaliland.
The ministry emphasized that foreign policy decisions are the prerogative of Guinea-Bissau's sovereign institutions and are conducted through established legal and constitutional channels. It urged the public and media to rely solely on official government communications rather than unverified digital reports.
Somaliland has operated its own government and administrative structures for over 30 years while seeking international recognition. However, Somalia regards Somaliland as part of its territory and opposes any recognition by other states. The African Union and most countries continue to uphold Somalia's territorial integrity and encourage dialogue to resolve disputes.
The statement reiterates Guinea-Bissau's commitment to international law, the United Nations Charter, the African Union Constitutive Act, and its international obligations. It confirms that no change has occurred in the country's stance on Somaliland and that any foreign relations decisions will be handled exclusively through authorised government institutions.
