Kenya's Harambee Starlets are determined to bounce back from their opening 4-0 defeat to Morocco at the 2026 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The team will face Senegal on Thursday, July 30, in Rabat, aiming to keep their hopes alive for the knockout stages.
Head coach Beldine Odemba acknowledged the disappointing start but emphasized the technical staff has identified key areas for improvement. "We are not happy with the result, but we have pinpointed where we fell short," Odemba told Citizen Digital. "We still have two matches and must capitalize on our opponents' weaknesses as we prepare for Senegal, whose playing style differs from Morocco's."
Odemba remains optimistic about the Starlets' chances despite the tough beginning. She referenced past encounters with Algeria as a learning experience, noting the team’s ability to adapt and improve.
Team captain Mwanalima Adam Jereko expressed confidence that the squad has moved past the Morocco defeat and is focused on unity and executing the coach’s strategies against Senegal. "We hope to win and will play with unity," she said.
Morocco’s coach, Jorge Vilda, praised the Starlets for their tactical discipline and progress since last year. Highlighting players like Mwanalima, Tereza Engesha, and Fasila Adhiambo, he predicted Kenya could overcome Senegal.
Following the Senegal match, Kenya will face Algeria on August 3 as they strive to reach the WAFCON semi-finals and secure a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
