The Harambee Starlets are set to kick off their 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a challenging match against hosts Morocco on Sunday night.

After a week-long training camp in France, the Kenyan team arrived in Rabat on July 23 and have been preparing at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, their official training base.

Confidence Ahead of Group A Opener

Head coach Beldine Odemba expressed optimism about the squad’s readiness, highlighting the blend of youth and experience within the team. "These young players bring valuable experience to our team. Some have already played at a World Cup and understand the demands of competing at the highest level," Odemba said.

She added that facing the host nation in the opening match is a welcomed challenge. "We want to start the tournament on a positive note, and we are ready," she stated.

Morocco’s Home Advantage

Morocco’s head coach Jorge Vilda, who previously led Spain to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup title, emphasized the motivation the home crowd provides rather than pressure. "Playing at home, in front of our fans and families, is an advantage. We do not feel pressure. Instead, we are excited and motivated to showcase our football," he said.

Morocco captain and reigning CAF Women's Player of the Year, Ghislaine Chebbak, remains focused on team success over individual accolades. "My goal is to give my best for the team. Individual awards are appreciated, but what matters most is winning trophies together," she remarked.

Kenya’s Road to WAFCON

The Harambee Starlets secured their spot at the 2026 finals with a 4-1 aggregate victory over The Gambia in the final qualifying round. Their campaign began with a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Tunisia.

  • In the first leg against The Gambia at Nairobi's Nyayo National Stadium, Kenya overcame an early deficit to win 3-1.
  • The return leg in Senegal saw a disciplined 1-0 victory, with captain Mwanalima Adam Jereko scoring the decisive goal.

This qualification marks Kenya’s return to the continental tournament and sets the stage for a competitive showing in Morocco.
