The Harambee Starlets are gearing up for a pivotal Group A match against Senegal at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Thursday, July 30, at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. This game follows a tough 4-0 loss to hosts Morocco in their opening fixture.
Kenya’s coach Beldine Odemba has focused on boosting the team’s mental resilience and confidence ahead of the encounter. "Technically and tactically, the team is prepared. Our focus now is on motivation and readiness for the challenge," she stated.
Odemba highlighted Senegal as a physically robust opponent, noting that the Teranga Lionesses also lost their first match 2-0 to Algeria. "We have analyzed Senegal’s gameplay and are ready to match their intensity. Both teams are seeking their first win, making this a crucial contest," she added.
The coach emphasized the need to improve finishing chances, recalling missed opportunities against Morocco. "A composed performance and concentration will be vital, especially if we concede first," Odemba said.
Left-back Enez Mango echoed the urgency of the match, describing it as a must-win for Kenya’s hopes of advancing and World Cup qualification. "We are mentally prepared, confident, and aware of Senegal’s physical style. We are ready and determined," she affirmed.
Senegal’s head coach Serigne Mousse cautioned against underestimating Kenya, acknowledging the Starlets’ talent and aggression. "We must be more competitive and make the most of this opportunity," he commented.
Kenya is expected to adjust tactically, particularly in defence, after a disorganized performance in their opener. The expanded 16-team WAFCON doubles as the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the top four semi-finalists earning automatic spots.
The Starlets will conclude their group campaign against Algeria on August 3 at the Olympic Stadium, while Morocco faces Senegal at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium on the same day.
