Gmail offers a brief period after sending an email during which users can undo the action and retrieve the message as a draft. This feature, known as "Undo Send," is designed to help fix mistakes such as missing attachments or incorrect recipients.

Understanding Undo Send

When an email is sent, Gmail temporarily holds it before dispatching. During this delay, an "Undo" prompt appears on screen, allowing users to cancel the send and edit the email. If the prompt expires, the email is sent permanently with no recall option.

Adjusting the Undo Send Time on Desktop

  • Log in to Gmail at mail.google.com.
  • Click the gear icon in the top-right corner and select "See all settings."
  • Under the General tab, locate the "Undo Send" option.
  • From the dropdown, choose a cancellation period of 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds.
  • Scroll down and click "Save Changes" to apply.

The updated setting takes effect immediately for all outgoing emails.

Changing Undo Send Duration on Mobile

The Gmail mobile app does not provide a direct option to modify the Undo Send timeframe. However, users can access the desktop site via a mobile browser:

  • Open a browser like Chrome on your phone.
  • Navigate to mail.google.com and enable "Desktop site" from the browser menu.
  • Follow the desktop instructions to change the Undo Send delay.

This change syncs with your Gmail account and applies across devices, including the mobile app.

Why Extend the Undo Send Time?

The default 5-second window may not be sufficient to catch errors such as missing attachments, forgotten CC recipients, or incorrect email addresses. Extending this period to 20 or 30 seconds provides a better opportunity to review and correct mistakes before the email is permanently sent.
